History of New York

 

            For over 100 years New York was a colony of Great Britian. It declared its independence on July 9,1776 and became one of the 13 original states of the Federal Union ; Albany became the state capital of New York on this day also.  On April 20 ,1777 the first Consistution was made and 3 months later on July 9,1777  George Clinton was elected governor. One year later on July 16,1788 New York becomes the 11th U.S. state following Virginia who was the 10th.

On April 30,1789 New York City , New York  beacame the first ever capital of the United States of America and on that day  George Washington was inaugrated to be the first president of the United States of America. In 1886 the Statue of Liberty,which was a gift from France,  became the first symbol of what America's mission was.

In 1959 the St. Lawerence Seaway which is a 189 mile waterway from Montreal to Lake Ontario, opens. It is ofter called the "Gateway to North America". In December, 1972 the North Tower of the World Trade Center was completed and in July 1973 the South Tower of the World Trade Center was completed and opened on April 4, 1973. On September  11, 2001 four planes were hijacked and two of them crashed in to the World Trade Center causing them to collapse.
